DroneBench - Rl Environment for In Silico Drone Engineering

The problem Drone teams design in CAD, then build a prototype to find out if it flies.

About the project

The problem

Drone teams design in CAD, then build a prototype to find out if it flies. Simulation is the alternative, but a proper run takes days to set up, so teams do it a few times per program instead of on every revision. Then a supplier runs out of a part, the replacement has a different tolerance or price, and nobody knows if the design still works.

Who it helps

Drone companies, and the engineer who gets handed a CAD file and asked whether it's ready to build.

The solution

DroneBench reads your CAD file and parts list and runs the physics in under a hundred milliseconds. It checks lift and drag, stability, the motor prop and battery chain, and spar strength at 3.5 g's. Fourteen pass or fail checks tell you if it flies, and when one fails it gives you the number and the limit you missed. Then it removes each part, reruns everything, and labels it required, helpful, or unnecessary. Roughly a fifth of parts on a typical design turn out to be dead weight.

The impact

Fewer parts means cheaper manufacturing and fewer suppliers who can stall a build. And because scoring is one command, it doubles as a training environment for AI models that design hardware.
